Position Summary or Faculty Qualifications

The Associate Director of Web Technology and Development will plan, organize, design and implement strategies for the University’s web sites and digital presence. The Associate Director works with the Director of Web Services to provide leadership in delivering, evaluating, implementing and maintaining web and digital communication services to support the needs of the University community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

● Provides leadership in University’s efforts to continually enhance web site design, usability and navigation; to establish and maintain web standards; to develop dynamic web features and functionalities; and to employ best practices in both design and web technology deployed.
● Works extensively with University partners to understand business/academic needs and translates requirements into enhanced websites and applications.
● Designs, develops, implements and maintains complex websites and applications to support the mission of the University and is proficient in a number of web technologies to support these tasks.
● Evaluates the web marketing and communication needs across the University and makes recommendations for integrated, strategic web technology solutions.
● Provides leadership in planning web development projects. Refines user requirements and scope along with developing detailed project tasks associated with web development work. Collaborates with clients and project teams to help identify solutions; participate in project discovery, analysis, strategy, and review.
● Develops wireframes, prototypes and proof of concepts during the planning stages to guide user-centered solutions.
● Evaluates new web technologies and makes effective recommendations regarding ways to apply these technologies to advance University web initiatives. Maintains expertise on state of the art and emerging web technologies.
● Conceptualizes and develops a framework of designs and interfaces that sustain the University’s brand, styles and aesthetics; develops web-specific brand standards for use across
● Manages and supports web sites for clubs, University blogs and ad-hoc mini sites; creates, implements and manages themes and plugins.
● Implements and maintains version control as part of the web development process. Makes recommendations for managing code bases across multiple development and production environments.
● Oversees development of training materials and programs to promote usage of systems and tools. Develops and provides training to web content creators and web managers throughout the institution.

Secondary Responsibilities:

● Participates in professional development functions to stay informed of advanced topics related to contemporary web design, particularly within a higher education setting.
● Provides technical support and guidance with respect to to the University’s supported content management systems (Drupal, Wordpress) and supports all University web developers, content managers and contributors.
● Ensures that the University’s web sites are compliant with government regulations and mandates including web accessibility.
● Participates in focus groups, usability studies, surveys, web analytics, and other metric-gathering practices to gain insight into user behavior and website performance.
● Provides ongoing collaboration with clients to identify opportunities to increase system usage by developing best practice approaches
● Hires, manages and mentors student employees.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

The position may require long periods spent in front of a computer. Also, weekend and after hours work may be necessary.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, web design or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, experience, and expertise.

• At least 3-5 years’ experience designing, developing and implementing complex web sites using technologies including X/HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP;
• Demonstrate progressive professional experience and responsibilities in web design, web development and use of web technologies
• At least 3 years’ experience working on large, complex websites utilizing CMS such as Drupal and WordPress
• Experience and knowledge in leading successful website and web application development phases of projects from resource alignment, coding, testing, launch and post launch support
Demonstrated experience using web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, and related languages. Proficiency working in a LAMP environment
● Demonstrated experience using WordPress with respect to creating and implementing custom templates, plugins, and integration with 3rd party services and authentication protocols.
● Demonstrated expertise in Drupal including working with Content Types, Fields, Taxonomy, Views, Panels, Features, etc. Ability to create custom themes and modules using the Drupal API is desired.
● Knowledge of version control, particularly the use of Git/Github/Bitbucket
● Knowledge and experience in implementing WCAG website accessibility standards
● Experience with responsive/adaptive web design
● Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills for interacting with multiple constituencies in a consensus-based environment.
● Excellent writing and editing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred.

Contemporary understanding of the role played by web and social media in the University environment.
● Working knowledge of server operating systems and web security.
● Working understanding of Google Analytics and SEO.
